Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority

I was born and raised in Suffolk, and I met Ms. Phyllis Harrison in February of 2003.
Mrs. Harrison works at the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority as a Family Sufficiency Coordinator for the Housing Choice Voucher Program. I was a participant of the Housing Choice Voucher Program and she began to counsel and motivate me to do something with my life and to improve my living situation. Mrs. Harrison introduced me to the Family Self Sufficiency Program and the Volunteer Program at SRHA. At first I was very hesitant about participating in the programs. I started to volunteer and do on-the-job training with Ms. Harrison as a Resident Service Aide to enhance my skills and enable me to obtain a full time position. I finally enrolled in the SRHA Family Self Sufficiency Program which was designed to set goals to becoming economically independent by gaining suitable full-time employment. The program also encouraged families to become self-reliant; and it provided opportunities to enhance life skills that ensure lifelong success for participating families. The ultimate goal of the program is to contribute to the elimination of welfare dependency. As a result of participating in the Family Self Sufficiency program and the recommendation of Mrs. Harrison, I was able to land a job with the Salvation Army as an Assistant Social Worker. Ms. Harrison told me if that goal was not completed or if I could not justify my reason for an extension I would lose my escrow. I had applied for a home through Habitat for Humanity before and was turned down. The application process was in progress again for the Home Builders Blitz 2008 (Suffolk). Ms. Harrison was right there tooting the horn along with Ms. Catherine Winston, SRHA Development Program Specialist, encouraging me to apply again. In partnership with the Habitat for Humanity of Southampton Roads, Ms. Harrison was assigned as my Family Advocate. I had to attend Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Workshops, do a monthly spending plan, and attend monthly SRHA Homebuyer's club meetings. So as you can see I was getting a double dose of becoming self-sufficient and it was no way to escape. As a result of the hard work and dedicated support of Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Winston, and Habitat for Humanity, I was granted a three bedroom, 1.5 bathroom house from Habitat for Humanity in the Huntersville section of Suffolk, VA.
