Paul Korchin: News Director
As a Jesuit volunteer fresh out of Georgetown University, Paul served at KNOM between 1987 and 1989: first as the station's education director and then as its news director. Paul has divided his subsequent years between academia and radio. In 1993, he completed a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. Paul returned to KNOM in 1997 as News Director; in 2001, he completed a PhD in Hebrew Bible & Semitic Philology at Harvard University. He continues to teach courses on Near Eastern history, literature, religion and culture at Northwest Campus, the local branch of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Paul devotes leisure time to writing scholarly articles, working out, playing fiddle, and hiking in the Alaskan outdoors. He's also a Technician Class amateur radio operator (call sign KL0WS).

Well, not for a year or two, though KNOM news director Paul Korchin has been working on a Ph.D. in pre-Old Testament languages since 1993.
"It's not my end-all," Paul says, "but it's more than a hobby." These days, most of his spare time are spent working on letters written in cuneiform Canaanite in 1350 B.C. Egypt. The last step of the process, which Paul describes as "intensive," is the writing of his dissertation.

KNOM: The Nome Static, July 2007

In June, with Paul Korchin and Jesse Zink briefly away, Amy headed the news department and was the voice of KNOM news for ten days.
If you were in Israel in June, you might have bumped into KNOM news director Paul Korchin (kneeling, left), who was volunteering on an archaeological excavation during a well-deserved vacation. By e-mail, Paul reported that he was in a relatively safe area, though "only 25 kilometers or so away from Gaza." Paul holds a PhD in ancient Middle Eastern languages from Harvard University, and his hobby is writing scholarly articles.
