Nathan Summers, a 2004 Logan grad, has been named the director of basketball of operations at Georgia State University by head coach Ron Hunter. Summers was a grad assistant at the school last season. Summers, who previously worked with Hunter at IUPUI, will assume the new role immediately. "Nate has been with me for five years and when the opportunity came along to move him into this role, I thought it was a perfect fit," Hunter said. "Nate did a great job last year as we were building our program and I look forward to him doing well in his new role as we look to bring championships to Georgia State." Last season, Summers assisted in team travel, player personnel, the program's recruiting database, team equipment and the day-to-day operations of a program that won 22 games, the second most in program history. Summers was a starting guard during the 2003 and 2004 seasons for Logansport in Skeeter Heath's final season and Al Rhodes' first season with the Berries. The 6-foot-1 Summers was known as a defensive ace and facilitator on offense in his playing days. Summers graduated from IUPUI in 2009 with a degree in sports management. He was a three-year manager for Hunter while being in charge of filming games, player equipment and assisting in team travel. After graduating from IUPUI, Summers spent the 2009-10 season as a varsity assistant at Monrovia High School. In his second year with the program, his continued his role as varsity assistant while serving as the freshman coach. The varsity squad went 14-9 and won the West Central Conference with a 6-1 record. He said he's excited to take the full-time paid position at Georgia State. Summers said as the director of basketball operations he's not allowed to be on the court with the team during practice, which is the big downside. But he is allowed on the bench during games. He said he hopes to eventually work his way up to assistant coach, preferably at the Division I level and at Georgia State. He said some current assistant coaches on the staff are ready to be head coaches now.
