Lavelle School for the Blind

Founded in 1904, Lavelle School for the Blind has provided over a century of special education for children who are blind and visually impaired. During this century, many of the alumni of Lavelle have assumed active, productive, independent roles integrated into their communities, jobs, and churches. They have accessed and successfully completed higher education, vocational education, and on-the-job training. These alumni travel and live independently. During the past 20 years change has come quickly to Lavelle as the demographics and multiple disabilities of the student population have changed. The Board of Trustees embraced these changes and responded proactively to assure that Lavelle School remains responsive to the special education and habilitation needs of children who are blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities. In 2007, the school's charter was changed to reflect the commitment to meet the special education needs of these children who face many challenges. EachSee more
