Benguela Current Commission - The Secretariat of the BCC

As Regional Training Officer, Monica Thomas is responsible for developing and implementing the BCC's Training and Capacity Building (T&CB)strategy, and coordinating regional and international T&CB activities.
Monica holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources (Fisheries & Aquatic Science) and a Master's degree in Environmental Management. Prior to joining the BCC she worked as an Environmental Officer for the Municipality of Walvis Bay. Monica highlights the importance of broadening the focus of the BCC's T&CB activities: "The emphasis has been on fisheries, but we need to take a multi-sectoral approach and make sure that all sectors receive benefits from the BCC's training and capacity building programme," she says. Monica is a keen environmentalist and regards herself as an advocate of sustainable development. She enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, and reading motivational books and watching TV - especially the National Geographic channel.
