Melissa Merker , a principal with William M. Mercer in Toronto who works in pensions and benefits , says she has seen a noticeable change in attitudes toward maternity leaves in the past 10 years. There definitely was a sense that if you walked away from your job for a period of time you would lose something. You would lose your credibility , says Ms. Merker , herself a lawyer and mother of two.I'm not hearing those horror stories so much any more.In fact , what I'm seeing is that there are even professional women who are taking extended leave. So I'm thinking that maybe there are a lot of women out there who have come to a better idea of balance..Still , much depends on the climate at work , Ms. Merker she says. All the federal or provincial regulations in the world won't help in a workplace where taking a long leave is not seen as the thing to do.If you are the lone female executive or you are one of only a handful of female executives you start to feel very self-conscious about taking maternity and parental leave , she says.I think the pressure there is very different..Ms. Merker says most human resources professionals she works with are women and many are torn about the new extended leaves.Although they themselves could benefit from them , she says the new rules also make the troublesome business of covering maternity leaves that much harder.Ms. Spinks and Ms. Merker both doubt that longer parental leaves will lead to a flood of Mr. Moms.
