On The Job - Mark Zefeldt (Market Analyst, Commercial)Spend a few minutes talking with Market Analyst Mark Zefeldt and one senses Mark has many ambitions and interests and not enough time to pursue them all.Take for instance his academic path during college.When Mark started college at the California State University at Chico he enrolled in the business administration and accounting program, but after his first year, he considered changing to the recreation and hotel management curriculum.A career in the hotel or casino industry seemed more alluring and exciting to Mark.But the 'dot com' phenomenon was at its peak and ultimately Mark recognized there was greater potential for financial success with a degree in Management Information Systems than with either accounting or hotel management. While the hotel and casino businesses are still intriguing to Mark, he has found his current position at UPI as the Market Analyst for the Commercial Department to be rewarding."I'm continually challenged by the ever-changing business environment," explained Mark."I've gained so much knowledge about UPI's business by working with many aspects of the mill and being exposed to the customer component of our business." Mark joined UPI directly after graduating from Chico State in 1998.Mark was familiar with USS-POSCO because his dad, James Zefeldt, had worked for U.S. Steel, first in Chicago 's data processing center and later in Pittsburg and abroad."My dad thought UPI would be a good place to work and recommended I look into job opportunities here after college," said Mark. He was initially hired into the Information Systems group as a systems programmer to update programs in anticipation of the Y2K event.Once that project ended Mark worked on a special project creating an online analytical application system. Jerry asked Mark if he'd consider the position."I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about UPI's business and gain valuable experience in forecasting and analyzing business trends and developments," noted Mark. Mark prepares short and long-range bookings and shipment forecasts, a monthly proceeds forecast, monthly market highlight reports, and a regular analysis of UPI's market share relative to what competitive product is coming in offshore and from both Eastern and local steel mills.According to Mark, the dynamics of today's business climate makes accurate forecasts a continuing challenge."The market condition and business environment often determine how real my numbers are," explained Mark."Last year, our forecasting was impacted by the fluctuating demand for our product.This year, we have such a high demand for UPI product that there is potential for overselling UPI production." Long before customer orders reach the customer service department, Mark and the commercial sales group have gathered input from UPI's customers about their anticipated tonnage requirements.Additionally, Mark has gathered valuable insight and observations on market trends for the next 6 to 12 months."From our customer feedback we might learn of recently-approved construction contracts in Southern California.From that information, we consider how those contracts are going to impact UPI business," said Mark. Currently, Mark is forecasting the short-term outlook for July and August.Business services will use Mark's forecast to create their model for production and shipping."Our production lead time is too long and the availability of raw material is limited, so it is critical we are prepared to respond to customers' orders once they are submitted," explained Mark.With such a demanding job, there isn't the time for Mark to pursue new interests but, given the opportunity, he'd like to explore new products and new markets for USS-POSCO. Away from work, Mark enjoys a variety of personal interests and hobbies."I'm busy every weekend and just about every evening," he explained.During the tax season, Mark will drop by his dad's accounting office on his way home from work to help his dad prepare clients' tax returns.He developed an interest in restoring cars as a teenager and continues to pursue this hobby with his recent restoration of a 1987 Ford Mustang.
