An award-winning community service run by Leicestershire Council has commissioned Inverness College UHI art lecturer, Mark Lomax (55) from Kirkhill, to help senile dementia and Alzheimer's sufferers in the midlands reconnect with their memories using art.
Mark, whose personal work highlights a deep interest in identity, personal history and memory, submitted four proposals hoping the council team would select one or maybe two for the project. However, the panel of judges were so impressed with his submissions they commissioned Mark to produce all four ideas by the middle of March. The four interactive pieces focus on themes which evoke vivid childhood memories everyone shares, such as going to school, meal times, hobbies and family, as well as recollections specific to people who grew up in Leicestershire. Mark plans to use objects such as old china, books and a suitcase mixed with natural elements such as twigs and pebbles, enabling people to remember through touch, smell and sound as well as sight. Mark said: "I'm really pleased and proud to be associated with this project. Mark's work is truly inspiring, and his students can look forward to the fresh perspective and ideas they are set to gain from his experience of participating in this exciting project."
