Michigan Officials Enter Battle of the Badges for Blood Donation: Top News Stories at Officer.com

"It is a campaign many of our Red Crosses do across the country," said Marie Mangus, spokeswoman for American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services."This is our first year."While blood supplies normally drop in summer because of vacations and other factors, this year's shortage has been especially tough, Mangus said."We attribute this to the loss of jobs in our area.Businesses we used to go to that had 300-400 people now have much fewer employees," she said.

Retiree is devoted to caring - 05/08/05

She is a very kind, warm and intelligent individual," said Marie Mangus, Detroit-based manager of public relations, communications and marketing for the American Red Cross.Keefe maintains a humble and unassuming demeanor and never seeks the spotlight, said Mangus."She's an individual who is truly committed, and yet when you talk to her, you'd have no clue that she's so involved," Mangus said.

"This is God sent," said an elated Marie Mangus, the Public Relations Representative for the Red Cross."We usually operate on 500 units a day, but we really need 2,700 to sit comfortably." The Red Cross may not have made enough to "sit comfortably" at this particular site, but it collected 179% of what it had originally predicted. "The Red Cross hoped to have 100-110 donors, total, all day," President of Palace Sports and Entertainment Tom Wilson said."They had that many in line when they started!"

Bottom line: Gay men can't donate

"The Federal government develops the guidelines that every blood service center in the nation has to abide by, we can not deviate from those guidelines," said Marie Mangus, Director of Communication and Marketing at Southeastern Michigan Blood Services. "The Red Cross takes a bad rap for this because blood donation is seen as a very personal and selfless act and because of the risk of HIV, we are unable to screen out the virus 100 percent." But some legal experts call the policy absurd. According to Mangus and the National American Red Cross website, blood donations are subjected to a 12-step, screening process for hepatitis antigens, HIV antigens and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The Oakland Press: Local News: Blood reserves at a critical low point

In southeast Michigan, supplies are so low, it's an emergency, said Marie Mangus, spokeswoman for the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross."It'll take another 10 days of solid collections before we're able to make headway into re-establishing an inventory of available blood," Mangus said.
