Maria has been an employment litigator and advisor for 14 years, and has litigated successfully and provided legal counsel to employers on matters dealing with race, sex, age, pregnancy, disability and hostile environment discrimination, including Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies. She practices in federal and state courts and before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state civil rights agencies. Maria also defends employers in Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) whistleblower investigations and litigation before the U.S. Department of Labor. She has obtained a decision before a DOL Administrative Law Judge dismissing SOX claims against the employer. She also advises and has litigated on Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance issues. She has significant trial and arbitration experience and has represented employers at numerous mediations. Maria counsels employers and develops creative, practical solutions on a wide range of employment law issues, including breaches of non-competition agreements, thefts of trade secrets, violations of the duty of loyalty, workplace violence, recruitment, discipline and termination issues, and employment policies and practices. She drafts policies on employment issues, including confidentiality and corporate compliance. She also drafts employment, non-competition, non-solicitation and confidentiality agreements. In addition, she defends employers at workers' compensation commission and unemployment compensation commission hearings and advises on workers' compensation and unemployment compensation issues. She has designed and implemented employment law training programs for various professional organizations in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
