Marco Dias, an Associate Director at KPMG responsible for the survey research, highlights the fact that the private equity industry was not only extremely busy in terms of investment activity, but this year also saw a record in terms of funds returned to investors.
These include the proceeds from the disposal of investments, repayment of loans and dividend receipts. "The current year saw R5,3 billion worth of funds being returned to investors, as compared with R2,4 billion in 2003 and only R1,5 billion in 2002," Dias said. "Whilst the continued strengthening of the rand has reduced the value of foreign currency denominated commitments, a more positive effect has been the increase in the significance of our industry by global standards or comparisons," Dias added.

Altogether R2,4bn was returned to investors, compared with R1,5bn in 2002, Marco Dias, senior manager at KPMG responsible for the research, said the increase in disposals, in value and number, was a trend that should continue. Due to a number of large independent private equity funds formed in the late nineties that were now reaching the end of their mandate terms, it was only "natural for these funds to look to exit and return funds back to investors", Dias said. The survey was compiled using results from 50 out of a potential 67 private equity managers.
