Press Releases - YWCA Canada

Lyda Fuller, Executive Director of YWCA Yellowknife, which operates shelters in Yellowknife and Fort Smith for women and children fleeing violence, reports that, "Women have told us that the guns used here in the North predominantly for hunting - that is, long guns - are also used to intimidate, subdue and control them.
We hear this over and over again, in small communities without RCMP and in larger communities with RCMP. Women do not want these guns to be unregistered, but do not feel safe expressing this opinion other than in whispers to people who may be able to voice these 'unpopular' opinions and who may be heard." When YWCA Canada addressed the House Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, Lyda Fuller said, "Please make it clear that it is not city-born, city living folks who are asking for this registry to continue; it is the voices of northern women who fear for their lives and their mental health who are asking for protection.

Lyda Fuller, Executive Director
Lyda has been the Executive Director of YWCA Yellowknife since February 1997. Lyda first came to the Yellowknife YWCA during the summer of 1996, on loan from the YWCA Regina, where she was also the Executive Director. She moved to Regina in 1991 from the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin where she was the director of community development. Lyda notes there are many similarities among YWCAs in Canada; all those she worked for had women's shelters, women's housing, licensed child care services, programming for girls, and some type of pre-employment and upgrading for women. Lyda moved to Canada in 1983 from Baltimore, Maryland, where she worked for the Maryland State Medicaid Program as the director of special initiatives. She became a Canadian citizen in 1986. Lyda has a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Maryland, and a Master's of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University. She has several recognition awards, including being named a Wise Woman for the NWT, a recipient of the Cleta Herman award from YWCA Canada, the Woman of the Year at the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, and a semi-finalist for Maryland State government's Women Manager of the Year.

Lyda Fuller
Lyda has been the Executive Director of YWCA Yellowknife for the past 15 years. She has been with three YWCAs across Canada - all of which have run shelters for women experiencing violence - for the past 25 years. Through her work with YWCAs, Lyda has also pursued supportive housing for women and children, improved residential support for adults with disabilities, licensed child care programs, empowerment programs for girls, programs for children who witness abuse, and northern research on women's homelessness. The YWCA Yellowknife has received funding from the GNWT to assist with shelter capacity building in the Northwest Territories, which has allowed the five shelters to meet together in Yellowknife six or more times each year to support one another and share information. Shelters have also been able to respond to the GNWT standards and develop a common policies and procedures manual that meet the standards. Lyda is a founding member of the Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition and the Coalition against Family Violence, as well as a variety of working groups related to the Family Violence Action Plans.
