No stranger to challenges, Lt Parsons joined Her Majesty's armed forces after completing the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Again fast-tracked through Sandhurst, officer-cadet Parsons had also tried soldier training, but decided that the opportunities as an officer were far greater. Taking a slightly different route into the Special Forces, 2nd Lt Parsons was first an officer in the Army Air Corps, flying the Apache Longbow assault craft. He was later noticed by an old friend of his father's, whilst at the British Army Training Support Unit Belize. Brigadier David "Smudge" Terry decided that the young Lieutenant was just what the SAS were looking for. Also assigned to the US exchange group, Lt Parsons met Capt Walton on the flight over to the States. After a short debrief, Lt Parsons found out that he would be serving as Capt Walton's XO, and assistant team leader of SG-4.
