Outdoor gathering center being built for veterans

Some of the veterans who have used the community center for counseling and advising services said although they can get what they need inside, the open feel of the gazebo-veranda will be a nice change, especially for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptons, said Larry Roberts, Avon Park American Legion Post 74 motorcycle riders service officer.
A U.S. Army veteran of Iraq Desert Shield-Storm who served from 1988 to 2001, he said he looks at the Veranda as a place for "family" to meet. "I look at the World War II and Korea guys as my grandfathers, Vietnam vets as my fathers, Desert Storm as my brothers and Iraq-Afghanistan as my sons; They're my second family. This will be a great place to get together," he said.

SEBRING Carol remembered a night when her husband, Larry, found out he, his wife and his daughter would be having French toast for supper.
Carol lives in Lake Placid with Larry, 68, a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and Site R, a deep, underground relocation facility for the Department of Defense in Pennsylvania. Sitting with a group of six others, She vividly shared the outburst of a night the little things seemed to cause him to explode. I had pancakes for breakfast! Youre trying to poison me! he hollered in a rage. The fact the Highlands spouse PTSD group is gaining exposure is good for veterans and their families elsewhere, said Larry Roberts, Avon Park American Legion Post 69 service officer. March 21, he organized a PTSD outreach program at the post and stays active as a PTSD counseling advocate. Its (the support group) letting spouses know theres nothing wrong with what theyre doing; its the vet, said Roberts, who served with the U.S. Army Armored Calvary from 1988 to 2001, Its a shame the VA (Veterans Administration) doesnt have a spouse support group.

Larry Roberts, Post 69 service officer, said the joint outreach program stemmed from a bill signed by President Barack Obama, The Senate voted 99-0 to pass the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act Feb. 3, while the House voted 403-0 in favor of it and Obama signed the bill Feb. 12.
We need that help now, said Roberts, who served with the U.S. Army Armored Calvary from 1988 to 2001, Roberts said although its a one-day presentation of PTSD services, the event would be ongoing through the veterans and their families abilities to reach out through the American Legion or the Highlands County Military Spouse Support Group. Joining Roberts in helping coordinate the presentation and effort is Marvin Desselle, president and chief executive officer of Heroes and Angels and president of P.T.S.D. 4 Vets and Highlands County Chapter 1097, Vietnam Veterans of America. Roberts, who served 24 years with the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, Iran and the Gulf War, said families needed to get involved because often, family members see the symptoms of PTSD before the veteran does. There are 18,000 to 20,000 veterans in Highlands County and at any one time, 30 percent of them could have PTSD or another disability, he said. If we can save or help even one of them, weve done something. For information, call Roberts, (863) 718-7773 or the Annette Owens of the Military Spouse Support Group, (863) 314-6000.
