"We have 24 zones in the building with the equivalent of eight cell sites (of capacity), which is a dramatic increase," said Ken Doll, AT&T's network director for south Texas.
"We've been working on this upgrade for a year, and we have it ready for the Final Four." Doll said wi-fi service also will be available inside Reliant, and COWs - cells on wheels - have been brought in to bolster AT&T service. "We're adding the additional spectrum for what we call the air interface, which is the wireless link from your device to our cell towers," said Ken Doll, AT&T's director of technical operations for its South Texas network.
As more people upgrade to 3G phones, the spectrum set aside for older devices is used less. As it's freed up, AT&T makes it available to 3G users, Doll said.
