Juanita Sanchez held off a late Prout rally and captured its first state title in school history with a 62-55 victory in the Division III finals of the Rhode Island Credit Union Championships. There were eight ties and three lead changes in the first half, but after Prout's 1,000-career-point scorer, Austin Martin (19 points), put his team ahead, 18-16, with 2:52 left, Juanita Sanchez closed out the half with a 9-2 run to take a 25-20 lead at halftime. Prout's swarming box-and-one defense caused problems for Juanita Sanchez early, but once the Cavaliers started penetrating the Crusaders' zone late in the first half, they scored easy baskets.Juanita Sanchez played a 1-3-1 zone defense that forced Prout to settle for a lot of outside shots, which limited the Crusaders to 55 points. COMING OF AGE: Juanita Sanchez and Prout have both come a long way since joining the Interscholastic League.The Cavaliers had to forfeit 11 wins in 2004-05, its inaugural season, due to the use of an ineligible player.Yesterday they erased those memories by beating Prout, 62-55, to win their first state title in school history.Last season Juanita Sanchez won 10 games before losing to North Smitfhield in the opening round of the playoffs.This season the Cavaliers boasted the top offense in Division III (68.3 points per game) and used their speed and athleticism to sprint to the state title.Juanita Sanchez guard James Shoneye, the game's Most Valuable Player, was an All-State football player for Central in the fall.
