More MEDFORD - It was nine seasons in the making, but Joe Robinson recorded his 100th wrestling coaching victory on Wednesday. Now the former Triton High and current Lenape coach hopes he's laid down a foundation that will allow his next 100 wins to come in a shorter time span. "It's a great day," Robinson said after his current squad defeated Triton 52-18 in an Olympic Conference interdivision match. "It's a big milestone. It wasn't easy, that's for sure. Hopefully it won't take that long to get the next 100. It's exciting because we're seeing a lot of progress in our room." When Robinson came to Lenape five years ago, he had some obstacles to overcome. The program had met with a measure of success in the 1990s and into the 2000s, but he came to Lenape during changing times. "We had some redistricting and we were forfeiting a couple of weight classes that first year," he said. The team went 6-20 in that first season. "But now we're starting to get some depth," Robinson said. "And that's why we're winning some matches." He credited his wrestlers with helping to rejuvenate the program. "Today's wrestling is all about having balance, and the kids have bought into the program," Robinson said. "The parents are very supportive; we have a great middle program, a great junior program, so we're set up. Our feeder program is helping us, and each year we're adding a little more depth to the room, so we're set up. I couldn't have asked for a better situation." Robinson had his best season two years ago when his team went 20-5. Senior Alex Felderstein recalled how Robinson motivated him to stay with the sport, even when times were tough in his freshman year in the program. "He always pushes me," he said. "He's made me the wrestler I am today. When I started out in the sport as a freshman, it wasn't looking too good, but we've come such a long way because of him and all the other coaches. " 'You're worst day is you're best day' that's what he always says. He really knows how to get the kids going. "(Robinson) is always there for us, and he's a great role model for us, which is good for all the kids." It was nine seasons in the making, but Joe Robinson recorded his 100th wrestling coaching victory on Wednesday.
