The Daily Item of Lynn: More Coverage > 'Tis the season to freak out: Holidays stressful time for many

Psychologist Joseph DiPietro, director of North Shore Medical Center's Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, says you can if you remember some simple guidelines.Among them, said DiPietro, is time management and not overbooking yourself."Learning to say no to certain commitments," he said.DiPietro said the holidays can also be difficult for those who recently lost a loved one.He said it is important for people in that situation not to isolate themselves."This is the first major holiday for them and they lose the sense of wanting to celebrate," he said."(They should learn) how to still celebrate out of the house and away from being alone."DiPietro said memorializing the deceased can also be a comfort."Many people do a memorial, have a Mass or visit the gravesite," he said."Since this is the gift-giving season, many people take trinkets, stuffed animals and flags to put at the gravesite." DiPietro said avoiding the malls around the holidays is also a great way to avoid stress."Learn how to manage as much (shopping) as you can through catalogs or online," he said."Avoid the stress of driving to the mall and looking for a parking space for half an hour."When shopping or making monetary donations, DiPietro reminded gift givers not to over spend."Learning to stick to a budget," he said."Set aside a certain budgetary amount."Finally, DiPietro said it is important to find time for you."Build in some time for down time for exercising, relaxing - just de-stressing," he said.

Stay calm, stay alert and involve teens

Keep your perspective, Dr. Joseph DiPietro, a psychologist at North Shore Medical Center, told parents.Adolescents are breaking away from their parents and forming their own value systems, he said. That can make parents anxious, and they may try to dominate their children in order to control their behavior - a strategy that can backfire.Instead, parents should set their feelings aside and focus on communicating with their child."Incorporating the child into problem solving is the most important element," he said."They have to make the decision to get help on their own."If parents find out a child is using drugs, DiPietro said, they should not confront the child until they are calm enough to talk about it."Most times you will be met with denial," he said, "particularly because they feel like you are accusing them of something, even though you may be right and accurate."
