About Us - FTF Engineering

John A. Dal Pino, S.E.
John A. Dal Pino, S.E. Principal Joining FTF as a Principal in April 2016, John is bringing his broad range of project work including structural design and analysis for new buildings, seismic evaluation and strengthening of existing and historic buildings, and construction-related mean and method activities including deep excavation bracing, and assessing the impact of underground tunneling on above grade structures. He has managed a number of very large projects of various building types and occupancies. John's design philosophy is that he wants to work with clients who value our services and wants to establish long-term relationships. After listening to and fully comprehending his clients' needs, he tries to find a solution that is tailored to their specific business needs first, and then determines how it fits within the building code, rather than the other way around. John is at his best when he integrates his business and economics knowledge with structural engineering to provide best-value services to his clients. John considers his being forthright, honest and confident and not worrying too much what other people think about him as virtues of doing business. Also he is not afraid to ask "what if..." questions. Knowing that engineering is more art than science, and questioning results until they make sense. Furthermore, he is not afraid to take calculated risks. John has a passion for reading and experiencing history, and learning about how our predecessors created the world we live in. He is truly fascinated by the history of Russia and the Soviet Union from about 1800 onward. During that time, the Russians and Soviets created and dissolved almost every economic, cultural, political and societal system we know of, with obviously mixed results. He is also passionate about conserving our natural resources. He loves to travel in the American Southwest, particularly the red rock country of the Utah national parks and old ghost towns like Bodie, CA and Grafton, UT, taking pictures with his Nikon. He also loves to explore German and Italian castles, historic train stations and the back roads of Eastern Europe, particularly the Balkans, on what for Americans is the edgy side of a vacation. Then relaxing at a nice hotel with a glass of the local wine. For John, travel is learning and experiencing, not sitting at the pool getting sunburned. John sponsors three teenage boys through the Save the Children program. The boys live in Appalachia (eastern Kentucky and Tennessee) and clearly don't have the advantages that his own two sons had growing up in California. John communicates with them by letter regularly and send them books for the holidays. John is hopeful that he can, in a small way, encourage them to achieve educational excellence and go on to college by telling them about what he has been able to achieve in engineering and life in general because of his education at the University of California. Prior to FTF Engineering, John had an accomplished career at Degenkolb Engineers in San Francisco, California from 1982 until 2016. John holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and a M.S. degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; furthermore, he completed his M.B.A from UC Berkeley as well. He is a licensed structural engineer in the state of California, he is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
