On the next play, another pass attempt was deflected by Huntington defensive back Jimmy Darden into the hands of teammate Gerald Vaught to end the threat."That first year it was mostly about adapting to the situation," Darden said."Coach Marks knows offense," Darden said."And he loved trick plays. He would draw a play in the dirt during the game.He would see a weak spot on their defense and try to exploit it.Coach Hunter was a defensive genius," Darden said.Darden, an investigator with the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office, was a member of the last Ferriday High freshman football team."I had waited all my life to play football at Ferriday High," Darden said."I grew up around Lake Concordia and I could hear the band, the whistles and yelling on Friday nights and I dreamed about playing there."Darden's freshman team went 5-0."In the middle of the year we played Ouachita Parish and they had twice as many players and we tore them up," Darden said.Darden did not get the attention of Huber or Vaught, but put up big numbers."In the paper it said, 'Possibly overshadowed by Huber and Vaught, Darden is consistent,"' Darden said.Darden, Huber and Vaught were members of Huntington's 440-yard and 880-yard relay team in track.Darden and Huber scored touchdowns, while Benny Wayne Huff passed to Vaught for two yards and a score and the rout was on.Darden remembers that game for another reason, as well."I saw my first Dixie Beer truck," he said."We walked in and the fans from Ferriday there gave us a standing ovation," Darden said.
