JAMES FACKENTHAL
James Fackenthal is a Chicago-area free-lance musician and scientific consultant. He is the former Associate Carillonneur at the University of Chicago where he also worked as a cancer researcher, and currently plays the carillons in Moser Tower in Naperville, IL, and St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church in Chicago. Fackenthal began carillon studies with David Caldwell at the University of Rochester in 1984, and two years later became a Carillonneur Member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA). Fackenthal is a former member of the GCNA Board of Directors, has served as a juror on the GCNA Examination Committee and is the former co-editor of the GCNA publication "Carillon News."

Jim Fackenthal is Assistant Carillonneur at The University of Chicago, where he plays the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Carillon, and is Research Associate and Assistant Professor, University of Chicago Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics. He is an member of the piano program at the University of Chicago and plays recorder and viola da gamba with its Early Music Workshop. An active carillon recitalist, he has played at two recent meetings of The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA) and performs regularly throughout North America. He has served on its Board of Directors and for many years edited its newsletter.

Jim Fackenthal is the Assistant Carillonneur at the University of Chicago where he also works as a cancer researcher in the Division of Biological Sciences. Fackenthal began carillon studies with David Caldwell at the University of Rochester in 1984, and two years later passed the advancement exam for the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA). While in Rochester, Fackenthal studied secondary piano at the Eastman School of Music and taught performance classes with the American Recorder Society. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology/geology from the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Indiana University. Currently a member of the GCNA Board of Directors, he has served as a juror on the GCNA Examination Committee and is the former co-editor of the GCNA publication "Carillon News."
