On the second day of the filing period, Sheriff Jackie Turner Sr. filed as a candidate for re-election.Turner, 56, will seek re-election to a third term.A Republican, he was first elected to the Sheriff's Office in 1994 when he defeated Sheriff Bob R. Haynes."I have always had a great love for law enforcement, and I am certainly happy with what I am doing," Turner said after he filed on Tuesday."I feel like we have made some tremendous advances in the services and the effectiveness of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.From day one, we have strived to hire the most capable individuals to serve in the Sheriff's Office, and I give the people here the credit for all of the good that has been done.I hope we have served the county for the past eight years in a way that convinces the citizens that we really care and we are trying hard."A native of McDowell County, Turner attended Marion High School and later attended Western Piedmont Community College.After serving with the Marion Police Department as a shift sergeant, Turner accepted employment with the McDowell County Sheriff's Department and started there as a lieutenant in the detective division.When he left in 1988, Turner was a captain over patrol, detective and dispatch.Because he is the sheriff, Turner is also one of the trustees of the Maxwell M. Corpening Jr. Foundation.Turner belongs to the Redeemed Free Will Baptist Church, where he serves as Sunday School superintendent.He is a member of Gideons International.He and his wife, Pat Turner, have three adult children and seven grandchildren.
