While the Ethiopian athlete bowed out at the sixteenth mile with a knee injury, Jackie Muller kept on going and crossed the finishing line after 6 hours and thirty five minutes.
Jackie Muller, who is the Secretary of Lothian and Borders Police Federation Joint Branch Board, said: "It was a great experience and the crowds were fantastic, but it was also the most painful experience of my life. No sooner had I crossed the finishing line than I started to seize up." She added: "But, I can say I have done it, and I have done it for a really worthy cause." Jackie took part in the marathon to raise money for the Police Treatment Centres charity. All monies raised will be used to support the planned improvement and refurbishment work at Castlebrae, the Police Treatment Centre in Auchterarder, Perthshire. To date Jackie has raised more than £4000, but it's not too late to donate. Jackie Muller, the Secretary of Lothian and Borders Police Federation, is running in the ING New York City Marathon on 7 November 2010.
As well as preparing for the physical challenge, Jackie is busy fundraising for the Police Treatment Centres. Jackie said: "Being able to run in aid of the Police Treatment Centres is really important to me. Every day I speak to officers who have received intensive, professional treatment at the Centres almost immediately following an injury or illness; treatment they could have had to wait several months to receive on the NHS." She added: Not only does this bring enormous benefits to these officers but in turn it helps their colleagues, and their force, who may otherwise have had to manage without them." In preparation for the marathon, Jackie joined a gym and has enlisted the help of a personal trainer to keep her motivated. During a recent visit to Castlebrae, the Police Treatment Centres in Auchterarder, she picked up plenty of tips from one of the Charity's fitness instructors, Douglas Jay (see attached photograph). Jackie said: "Before starting my marathon training, the last time I did any serious running was during my initial police training more than twenty years ago. I'm a former smoker who enjoys the odd glass of red wine and sometimes I wonder what I have let myself in for. "But, I am determined to succeed. I don't want to break any records; I just want to get round the course and raise as much money as I can for the Police Treatment Centres. As if the challenge of completing the marathon isn't enough, Jackie has set herself a huge fundraising target. If you would like to help Jackie achieve her target, you can sponsor her via her JustGiving page ( www.justgiving.com/Jackie-Muller)
