Heru Billed to Perform and Speak at Garvey Extravaganza Renown Spoken Word artist, Heru, will be the headline guest performer at the Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza and Pan-African Bookfest on Sunday, August 17, 2008.Heru has also been invited to be a panelist at the Town Hall meeting which will climax the Garvey birthday extravaganza and Pan-African Bookfest later that evening. Now widely recognized as a celebrated Spoken Word Poet, Heru (www.heruspeaks.com) is an award winning Poet who is legendary for his mesmerizing performances, intellectual creativity, historical depth and active collaboration with the modern UNIA, the organization originally formed by Marcus Garvey.Heru came to America from Ghana, West Africa when only a child.He learned English as a necessity, never knowing that it would be a tool he would later use to affect the consciousness of those who would hear him.His name Heru, is an ancient African Kemetan (Egyptian) name, found in the prototype trinity of Ausar-Auset-Heru (Osiris-Isis-Horus).The multi-talented performer holds a Bachelor's of Science in the field of Biopsychology from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.He also holds a Juris Doctorate from Northeastern University School of Law.He passed the Florida Bar in 1998 and practiced law until 2001, when he decided to retire and chose a career as a professional Spoken Word performance poet.To date, Heru has released 5 critically acclaimed spoken word poetry albums.Also to be released is his book, The Unapologetic African: Inside the Mind of a Frontline Poet.All CDs are receiving plenty of air play- a rarity for Spoken Word.Heru is also busy on the road as his performances are in great demand.Heru is no stranger to South Florida.In 2001-2002, he founded and hosted a weekly open mic session called Spoken Word With No Apology at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in Liberty City, Miami.He was rewarded with The Best Open Mic Poetry Venue Award by the Miami New Times Best of Miami Poll for 2002.And in the field of performance poetry, Heru was named Spoken Word Poet of the Year by The Harambee Radio Network.He has performed, spoken and lectured at countless colleges, universities and festivals, performed his own show at the National Black Theater in Harlem, New York, and has performed on the newly created TV cable network called the Black Family Channel.Internationally, Heru has performed extensively in Africa and the Caribbean.In addition, Heru was invited to perform in Ghana at the world renowned Panafest where he was one of few invited international artists.In the meantime, Heru is the co-host of the popular internet radio show Black Star Lion 9 Time which is syndicated on Harambee Radio and LibRadio heard nationally and in over 42 countries world-wide.His radio show features and interviews top poets, singers, musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, playwrights and more.Heru will be live in concert as a Spoken Word performer and will also speak as a panelist at the Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza and Pan-African Bookfest which will be held on August 17, 2008, at the Joseph.C.
