Street use of opiates `fed by lax doctors'

But College of General Practitioners president Helen Rodenburg said that in most cases controlled drugs were already prescribed with a lot of checks and balances. Any problems were usually with individual GPs being unaware of guidelines or not following them properly. It was unlikely more guidelines would solve that problem, she said. "If police or specialists know there is a problem in an area they should refer it to a local doctors' group so someone can go in and give some individual guidance." A spokesman from Medsafe -- the Health Ministry agency responsible for monitoring prescribing -- was not available for comment.Tell A Friend>
