The Episcopal Academy began the 2005-2006 school year with a new Board of Trustees Chairman, Mrs. Gretchen Burke.Burke replaces Rush T. Haines ('61), who served as chairman for the past six years.Episcopal's 27th board chair, Burke received her M.B.A. from Harvard University and her B.A. from Colgate University.She has held executive positions as a Vice President for Strategic Planning at Security Pacific and Assistant Vice President at Manufacturers Hanover Bank.Burke's appointment breaks new ground for the school.Although 49 women have served as members of the Episcopal Academy board, Burke is the first woman elected as chairman. Burke will work with Head of School Ham Clark to oversee the school's move to Newtown Square and the capital campaign that will provide a portion of the necessary funding.Gretchen was clearly the best person for the job."Gretchen Burke has the skills, the interests and the commitment to Episcopal that is needed at this critical time in the school's history.Burke has served on the Episcopal Academy Board for over four years and has also chaired the Development Committee.In addition, she serves on the Development and Finance Committees for The Steppingstone Foundation and is a member of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Associates.Burke is chair of the Investment Committee at the Philadelphia Zoo, where she is also a board member.The Burke family's five children attend the Episcopal Academy."I am honored to follow in the great tradition of Episcopal Academy alumni and parent board chairs, especially during this momentous time in the school's history," said Burke.
