At a recent Data Centres conference, PM Group's Graham Langton analysed the key credits within the LEED V4 system and reviewed the certification process.
By bringing data centres into the suite of LEED rating systems, the USGBC has removed barriers so that more data facilities can participate in LEED. Whereas a typical building is designed to meet heating and cooling needs for occupant comfort, data centres have few occupants and are huge consumers of energy, requiring massive cooling power for servers. This makes them unique. "Although LEED V4 is a step up in terms of the overall sustainability requirements, the tailored system streamlines the certification process and creates clarity. Said Graham. "A LEED pre-assessment would quickly determine whether a data centre could achieve certification and to what level. Engaging with all stakeholders and conducting a LEED pre-assessment is the critical starting point. The pre-assessment dispels any misconceptions and provides a clear path to certification."
