Schindler says Klamath fish primarily contribute to fisheries from Windy Bay south, but with such a large number, some should turn up further up the coast. Sacramento kings "mushroom" out more, he says. Most California kings tend to be 3-year-olds whereas stocks from roughly Port Orford north tend to be 4-year-olds. The biologist calls Klamath and Sacramento salmon "a quick-maturing fish." "They're 8- to 12-pound fish in the ocean," Schindler says.

"The majority of these small, 2-year-old chinook are now in the 21- to 24-inch range," said Eric Schindler, the head of the Fish and Wildlife Ocean Salmon Project, "and they meet the minimum legal size in the ocean sport fishery south of Cape Falcon. Schindler said all salmon in the ocean that meet the minimum legal size are considered adults, and those must be recorded on the catch record.
