COTUIT, MA - George Washington junior pitcher Eric Cantrell led the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Summer League to their first league championship in 44 years of existence, when they swept Cotuit with a 5-1 win at Lowell Park to win the Arnold Mycock trophy and claim a place among the other nine teams in the league as champions.
Cantrell pitched a strong 5-plus innings for Bourne, striking out six and allowing only one run. Cantrell had previously been named Player of the Week earlier in the season when he threw eight shutout innings against Wareham. Cantrell is entering his junior year at George Washington in the fall. This past season, he ranked second on the team in wins (5), innings pitched (72.2), strikeouts (60), and ERA (4.40). Cantrell also was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman in 2008. That season, he became of part of history when he threw the first competitive pitch at the new Nationals Park in Washington, DC on March 22 in a 9-4 victory over Saint Joseph's.
