Business Owners Try to Motivate Employees - Bert Martinez

To show appreciation for her five employees, Elise Lelon, owner of The You Business LLC, a leadership-consulting firm in New York, says she upgraded their job titles.
"It doesn't cost me anything and it makes them feel good," she says. "You've got to think outside the money box when it comes to motivating your employees in this economic environment." Ms. Lelon says workers tend to value senior titles like "director" and "manager" because these can make their résumés more robust. "I have two housewives who were high-powered women before they settled down and had families," she says. "We crafted titles and roles that offer them more continuity. As a result, they feel as if they haven't missed a beat with their careers." The You Business LLC Elise Lelon, right, upgraded job titles to motivate employees at her consulting firm, The You Business LLC. Ms. Lelon pulled other levers as well. For example, she granted her staff the option to work remotely and at hours of their choosing, including nights and weekends. "Autonomy is worth a lot to people," she says.

Untitled Document

Elise Lelon brings unique personal and professional experience to consulting, because she has not only worked in the fields of both psychology and business, but has served in a variety of senior management roles in both fields, as well.
As a result, she is more than versed in psychological and business theories. She has spent the last two decades practicing them. She has walked the walk, so to speak. And, that makes a big difference in her work with both corporate and private clients. The You Business™, with its proprietary paradigm for life management, represents Elise's way of merging these intersecting pathways of business management and human development into one comprehensive system for sustained success. Prior to founding The You Business™, Elise Lelon served as a Managing Director at Bernstein Investment Research and Management in New York City. She began her Wall Street career as a sell-side equity research salesperson at Sanford C. Bernstein, servicing large institutional clients in the U.K. and continental Europe. Previously, she worked in a variety of capacities at General Electric and NBC, where she was trained as a Black Belt in Six Sigma. Before she entered the business world, Elise worked at Massachusetts General and McLean Hospitals at the Joint Program in Pediatric Psychopharmacology, where she conducted both clinical and research work with patients suffering from severe psychopathology. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Brown University, her Ed.M. in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard, and her MBA from Harvard Business School. Elise has traveled extensively to Africa, Bhutan and India. She co-authored a chapter for Cambridge University Press entitled, Maximizing the value of leadership development: Key Questions (and some answers). Today, Elise serves on the Board of Trustees for Town Hall and volunteers at The Bowery Mission Women's Center, where she recently helped raise $1M as co-chair for the annual Gala.
