David Fritsch, an analysis and forecasting expert with the U.S. Energy Information Administration, said SRP executives likely made the right call.
"Natural gas has come down [in cost] more in the last six years more than people expected it," he said. "Mainly, it's because of all the shale drilling in the east." In addition to the new drilling and natural gas discoveries, construction of new pipelines to move the fuel across the western United States means prices should remain competitive. "There's definitely a lot of gas-on-gas competition," Fritsch said.
