"We're excited about it," said Dave Angerer, director of educational services for PrepNet and the first principal at Grand River Prep.
"Ever since we opened (Grand River Prep), we began getting questions and pleas from parents in the Canton area for the type of school we were starting here in Grand Rapids. It's been a long time, but it's exciting to talk to parents about the reality of a high school." PrepNet is a Grand Rapids-based organization that operates high schools. Angerer said the company partners with NHA, which serves a similar clientele. NHA-operated K-8 schools are expected to provide "about 75 percent" of the students that enter Canton Prep, according to Angerer. Canton Prep will take the education students got in the K-8 schools and "will build on that," Angerer said. "The rigor of our program, the focus of our college prep program ... those are the things that sell to parents," he said, "along with our expectations and character building are important parts." The 23-acre site on which Canton Prep is being built is adjacent to the site where Plymouth-Canton officials will start building a new middle school, on Cherry Hill near Canton Center. Citing the school's "rigor," Angerer said Canton Prep would offer the same 23 Advanced Placement courses offered at the company's other high schools. "It's not uncommon for our students to come out of high school with two or three semesters of college credit," he said.
