Havertys 3Q earnings slump on lower sales | Furniture Today

In a release, Havertys Chairman, President and CEO Clarence Smith called the period "challenging" for Havertys and others in the industry, and noted how the earnings reflect the softer sales resulting from the storm.
"We achieved increased profit margins, with pricing discipline, quality control, and operational focus, even as ocean freight rates increased," Smith said. "We look forward to the remainder of 2017 and the seasonally strongest sales events of the year," Smith said. "We remain passionate about serving the on-trend furniture customer and confident in our ability to innovate and grow our business, despite strains from the current housing and competitive landscape." Havertys began expanding its Coppell, Texas, distribution center in September and in mid-October opened a replacement store in Columbia, S.C., "in the heart of the best retail shopping area," Smith said. "These investments are part of our strategic growth and store rationalization plan," he said, noting how the company continues to generate strong cash flow and boosted its quarterly dividend in August by 25%.

"We are encouraged by the improvements in the macro environment in both housing and wages, key drivers of our business," said Clarence Smith, chairman, president and CEO of Atlanta-based Havertys.
"We have strengthened our brand in existing markets and have expanded into new communities." Smith explains Havertys is having consistent success in its custom upholstery business and it has increased by double-digits for eight of the past 10 quarters. "Our free in-home designers' consultations are generating business in the near term and establishing relationships for future sales," Smith said.

Hurricane Irma cuts into Havertys 3Q sales | Furniture Today

"The third quarter was one of our more challenging periods in recent years," Havertys Chairman, President and CEO Clarence Smith said in a statement.
"Our markets were not directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey, but its devastation heightened the concern for the larger and more powerful Hurricane Irma." Havertys closed stores, readied for severe weather and halted home deliveries in advance of Irma. Smith said 55 of the companies 124 stores were closed for at least one day, including stores in metro Atlanta. "We were fortunate to have only minor property damage to a few locations, but 14 stores remained closed for three or more days due to power outages," he said, adding the retailer is working with its insurance provider on recovery claims. "Hurricane Irma disrupted not only our retail operations, but also caused us to close our Florida and Eastern distribution centers and corporate offices," Smith said.
