Richardson, who served in WWII and is now buried in Colleville sur Mer, France.Christine Sleeper has seen the ravages and secondary effects of war up close. This may have had an impact, she says, on why she now lives every day to the fullest. The 90-year-old Herndon resident was a Red Cross volunteer in France during World War II.Last month, some 63 years later, she went back to lay a wreath on the grave of a Red Cross worker who was killed there during that time.Sleeper began her career as a teacher in Derry, N.H.; where she taught French to soon-to-be pilot and Apollo astronaut Alan Shepard. "He didn't use it much up in space," she said, laughing.Click Here!> > In 1941, while still in her 20s, Sleeper became one of the very few women of that era to earn an airplane pilot's license for herself."The country was preparing for war," she recalled.Sleeper worked at the airport for two years but felt that she could do more for the war effort."I applied for the American Red Cross," she said."I got in and was sent to Naples, Italy. It was a toss up.Half my group went to Egypt and the other half went to Europe."Sleeper was eventually transferred to Paris, France, where she returned last month with other Red Cross workers to pay respects to a fallen comrade."It was wonderful going back, especially with others who had also been there before," said Sleeper, who married and went back to teaching after the war.Sleeper later taught Latin at Herndon High School, where she retired at the age of 84."I decided that I had better resign and get going here and do some traveling, so I went to the Antarctic," she said matter-of-factly.
