Carol Bartley, RNALBANY, NY -- May 31, 2005 -- Carol Bartley, RN, of Niskayuna, director of nursing at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, is the inaugural recipient of the St. Peter's Health Care Services Nursing Leadership Award. The Kathy Brodbeck Nursing Leadership Award, chosen by a committee, recognizes a nursing leader for a sustained level of excellence.This recipient exemplifies the values of St. Peter's Health Care Services: Compassion, Reverence for Each Person, Community, Hospitality, Excellence, Integrity, and Courage.In nominating Bartley, the entire leadership team of Our Lady of Mercy Life Center said she "balances grace with professionalism, and is very committed to our organization, staff, families, but most of all our residents."Carol has championed the personal and professional growth of her staff, improved resident and employee satisfaction, maintained/enhanced our financial stability as well as our overall quality."Her achievements include: developing the staff in order to reduce the need to hire temporary agency personnel; leading initiatives in pressure ulcers (bedsores) and pain management that were commended by IPRO, the statewide quality improvement organization; designating a dementia aide to work with those patients.As a result of her efforts, OLMLC received excellent reviews from the state Department of Health two years in a row.Bartley, who has a bachelor's degree in nursing from SUNY-New Paltz and a master's in health systems management from Union College, has been a nurse since 1970. Since joining St. Peter's in 1987, she held a variety of leadership positions and began the OLMLC post in 2002.She and her husband have three grown children.
