Publisher: Brett GarfinkelFounder Brett Garfinkel, the former luxury ad director for Men's Journal, hatched the idea after speaking with high-end brands."They're lukewarm about men's mags like GQ and Esquire but really have no other outlet," Garfinkel claims.He is unabashed about his focus on advertisers: "Most magazine launches are started by editorial people, who then come to somebody like me to sell it," Garfinkel says."There's an over-saturation of men's titles appealing to lowest common denominator."Garfinkel and the rest of the eight-person JAQK staff-including executive editor Jack Wright, who helped launch Gear and served as executive editor of Men's Journal and Us Weekly-are living the magazine's ‘no risk, no reward' tagline by currently working sans salary."A lot of magazines launch without full financing under their belt and think the first few issues will carry them," Garfinkel says, adding that his plan is to raise $7 million.Instead Garfinkel says JAQK has teamed with six of the top casinos in U.S. to share lists and distribute the magazine free to guests.
