He says that the last few years have seen a noticeable uptick of defaults across the sector, including both rated and unrated projects[2]. "Between 2011 and 2012, most defaults in the rated universe occurred in the US power sector and were related to either interest rate risk, market price exposure, or chronic operational issues," he says. The unrated universe, meanwhile, which is financed primarily by bank loans, can be tricky to analyse due to the lack of data in the market place. "However," adds Gevero, "project finance consortium members can leverage the S&P Capital IQ database which has considerable coverage across each region. Arnold Gevero says that "since 2010 project finance growth across all global regions has been in the double digit range - particularly in Asia Pacific and Latin America.
