Dr. Archibald Hart Recognized for Outstanding Leadership in Christian Counseling :: News :: Fuller

Dr. Hart honored by the American Association of Christian Counselors
Arch Hart Dr. Archibald Hart, dean emeritus of Fuller's School of Psychology and senior professor of clinical psychology, was honored with the Distinguished President's Award of 2013 by the American Association of Christian Counselors. The award is given by the AACC Executive Board for outstanding influence and leadership in the development and advancement of Christian counseling around the world. Hart was recognized with the award at the American Association of Christian Counselors' World Conference held in Nashville on Sept. 11 -14. He is the first ever recipient of the award. The AACC has a membership of 70,000 and 6,000 members were present at the World Conference held this year. "I was totally taken by surprise at the AACC plenary event when they called me up to give me the award," Dr. Hart said. "At least 32 international groups were present, and because so many more internationals were unable to attend our World Conference, at my request AACC agreed to make the recordings of workshops available, free of charge, to all of the international associations represented at the conference. For this, and the recognition I have received from AACC through the trophy, I am very thankful." Speakers at the event have included some of the world's top Christian counseling experts, including Dr. Hart, and Fuller's Professor of Psychology Siang-Yang Tan; Professor of Youth, Family, and Culture Chap Clark; Professor of Marital and Family Therapy Terry Hargrave and his wife Sharon; and Joyce and Cliff Penner, chairman of Fuller's Board of Trustees. Hart noted: "Since I came to Fuller Seminary from South Africa 40 years ago to be on the Psychology school's faculty, it follows that I would be very involved and actively pushing for AACC to reach out to the world, and not just be an American thing." For many years, Professor Hart served as international director on the Board of AACC. He also formed the International Network for Christian Counselors designed to promote support and training internationals. He served as president of that group and travelled with other AACC members in order to help them establish their own Associations for Christian counselors.
