Tony Roderigues provided a fantastic overview of effective financial management for business.
As an executive at Clover, Tony has 25 years experience within the perishable goods/manufacturing industry. Tony's unique style focused on the importance effective budgeting in order to enable to business to mange its expense and grow the business. The main discussion throughout the day was how to use effective financial management to generate new business and inefficiencies in a way that creates cash for the business. We investigated the various methods improving the cash balances of a business and how to differentiate between the various ways of generating additional profit. A major part of the presentation reflected on the use of debt instead of capital to launch and grow your business. Tony highlighted the fact that you should never use your own money to start a business, instead use it as security and borrow money. The more security you have, the more you will be able to borrow from the bank or investors. The latter will enable you to finance your business with money that would otherwise take you years to accumulate. The benefits of debt also include tax savings and access to more debt at lower interest rates. WARNING: Although this may be an effective way of raising capital to grow and develop a business there are serious consequences if your business fails. Much of the earlier american debt crisis and current Euro-zone crisis has been created because banks borrowed money freely without thinking of the repercussions if people were unable to pay off their debt. (Read more about this issue elsewhere as it has headlined a number of times over the last year or so.)We concluded our budgeting exercises with Tony and dived straight into operational management with Hans Kuilman.
