Our first featured physician will be Andriette Ward, M.D.Andriette T. Ward, MD, MPHDr. Andriette Ward is a general pediatrician who currently holds a position as a Clinical Instructor in the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.She received a BA from Yale University in New Haven, CT, an MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, and an MPH in Health Services Research from UCLA. Dr. Ward is a motivated clinical researcher dedicated to conducting culturally appropriate community-based research among ethnic minority populations.Currently, Dr. Ward is assisting on an NIH-funded multi-site trial to evaluate Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY).In this capacity, she works with a multidisciplinary team to pilot test and implement this study that heavily recruits ethnic minority adolescents with diabetes.In addition, Dr. Ward has collaborated with two commercially-available pediatric weight-management programs (Kids N Fitness and POWERPLAYMD) to assess the effectiveness of these programs for achieving initial and sustained weight-loss among overweight pediatric patients.Currently, she is developing a pilot program to design and evaluate alternative strategies for the treatment of severely overweight adolescents.Dr. Ward was featured in the February 2006 issue of O Magazine, and was an invited guest on the Today Show because of her innovative ideas and personal weight-loss success.Dr. Ward maintains her ties with several community pediatricians to better facilitate the translation of research to the community.She is a member of several medical organizations, and serves on the board of the Association of Black Women Physicians.

Dr. Andriette Ward, a pediatric obesity specialist at Children's Hospital, Los Angeles, interviewed in the February 2006 issue of O Magazine, feels so strongly about the abuse to childrens' health caused by junk foods she argues that, "as with cigarettes and alcohol, minors should be protected from the foods that are robbing them of their childhood."If Ward had her way, unaccompanied children under the age of 16 would not be permitted to buy soda.She would even expand that ban to include junk food like chips, doughnuts, and candy.
