Andrew Steven Pumerantz
An internist trained at Yale as a clinical infectious disease specialist, Andrew S. Pumerantz, DO, is Professor of Internal Medicine, Assistant Provost for Strategic Initiatives, and Executive Director of the Western Diabetes Institute (WDI) at Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU). He is also a Visiting Clinical Professor of Global Health at Jodhpur School of Public Health, India. Dr. Pumerantz formerly served as WesternU/COMP's infectious disease division chief and internal medicine department chair until 2012. In 2009 as internal medicine chair, Dr. Pumerantz founded the WDI as an academic, integrated practice unit (IPU) focused on the 'whole person' with diabetes and multimorbidity. In 2012 he created the DXDI ©, or Diabetes Cross-Disciplinary Index©, for the IPU team to facilitate whole-person visualization, trans-ecosystem communication, and health outcomes tracking. A 1988 graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Pumerantz completed internal medicine residency and chief medical residency at Beth Israel Medical Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has active collaborations with research colleagues in the UK, the Mayo Clinic Rochester, Temple University, and in Rajasthan, India. Dr. Pumerantz and his two colleagues at WesternU's College of Pharmacy hold US and Australian patents on novel pegylated liposomal vancomycin (PLV) formulations, which are designed to improve treatment outcomes for MRSA pneumonia. He also founded and heads a healthcare consulting firm in Irvine, CA, whose clients extend from Washington, DC, to India.
