Huron Daily Tribune - News - 05/12/2005 - Going to nationals

Eighth-graders Allie Stevenson and Amanda Grifka, members of the Ubly chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), were looking for an entrepreneurial idea earlier this school year when Osentoski came up with the business name "Beauty on Wheels.""She gave us the name, and we went from there," Amanda said. The two came up with a mobile beauty salon service for elderly people who are home bound. The service would offer all the usual services of a salon , hair, manicures, pedicures, etc."We thought it would be interesting to start our own business," Amanda said.Amanda and Allie, along with FCCLA adviser Tammy Laurie, traveled to the state FCCLA conference in April. For the competition, Amanda and Allie have to develop a plan for a small business using family and consumer science skills and sound business practices.Allie and Amanda are both first-year FCCLA members."I joined because it was something extra for me to do," Allie said."I wanted to try out different careers ...I enjoy going to different places and meeting new people (and) competing.""I like doing fund raising and being in a group of people who are my friends," Amanda said."It's something different to do."While in San Diego, Amanda and Allie will do their business presentation for competition and will attend workshops and seminars.Allie and Amanda will be raising funds to go on their trip to the national competition. To donate money for Allie and Amanda to go to the national competition in California, contact Tammy Laurie at Ubly High School at (989) 658-8554.
