A FORMER trader has claimed Marlow is "becoming a shanty town", bemoaning high rents and the loss of independent stores.
"Marlow has lost it's attraction. Adam Marlow, 29, was co-owner of Mekong, a neighbouring shop to Marlow Flooring, which also recently closed. Mr Marlow, who is also part of the Marlow Chamber of Trade executive, agreed rents were too high generally, and said of Spittal Street: "It looks really bad. Jonathan Gould, Senior Estates Manager, at Sorbon Estates, said: "The rents for any town's properties including Marlow are ultimately set by the market. A CALL to shovels has helped boost custom in Marlow during the last few days before Christmas.
Last weekend's heavy snowfall left Marlow resembling "a ghost town" as shoppers stayed away. But a plea from the Marlow Chamber of Trade's vice president, Adam Marlow, for traders to plough their shop fronts has been acted on. According to Mr Marlow more shops mucked in to help clear their pavements outside and - coupled with council gritting - business is making a comeback. "It was lethal - people were slipping all over the place. Now there are more shoppers walking on the streets," said Mr Marlow, who is also the co-owner of Mekong Gifts, on Spittal Street. For heavens sake, Marlow obviously has a vociferous Chamber of Trade, but it's just one of MANY towns you should be reporting on and this is at least the THIRD article you've posted in 4 days about how Marlow trade has been hit by the snow. Trade in Wycombe, Aylesbury and smaller places like Chesham, Beaconsfield and Great Missenden has been hit too. If you can't find real news, at least ad some variety as to where the non-news is about. It is meant to cover Wycombe, Penn, Holmer Green, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Great Missenden, Princes Risborough and others, NOT just flipping Marlow. I don't object to them reporting Marlow; I just resent lazy "journalism" (=just reprinting press releases from interested parties) and the fact they are not covering the whole of the region they purport to to cover. Marlow Chamber of Trade vice president Adam Marlow said: "If they [shops] all just cleaned the pavement in front of their own shops, the town as a whole would be safer for everyone.
"It only takes ten minutes and it makes a big difference. Some shops have already done so and have got a positive reaction from customers and people walking past." And Mr Marlow - who is also the co-owner of Mekong on Spittal Street, is optimistic that there is still enough time to recover from the weekend's difficulties. He added: "We were down a lot on Saturday - probably about 50 per cent but I am confident it will improve during the week to compensate." Just been to Marlow. Dunkirk spirit! Didn't see any boats but plenty of sledges. Just been to Marlow. Dunkirk spirit!
