THE Victorian Society in America was founded in 1966. Six years later, the New England Chapter was organized, and has had its headquarters at the G ibson House Museum, 137 Beacon Street, in Bostons Back Bay, since 1974. The founding of the New England Chapter helped to rally a constituency for the nascent local historic preservation movement in Boston and New England. The VSA/NE welcomes the opportunity to cosponsor educational programs with other cultural nonprofit organizations, and has collaborated on special tours and talks with many Boston-area institutions. The Society also serves as an advocate for the preservation of Bostons and New Englands nineteenth-century built environment. Society members testify at public hearings on behalf of endangered Victorian cultural resources and promote preservation awareness through the VSA/NEs popular annual Preservation Awards Program, which honors those who have saved historic properties from destruction and/or returned historical buildings, objects, and landscapes to their original glory. THE Victorian Society in America / New England Chapter invites to membership all who share an enthusiastic interest in 19th century architecture, decorative arts, and social history. Based in Boston, in Back Bays historic Gibson House Museum, the Society offers popular and educational programs to foster increased appreciation of our Victorian past, and through its annual awards acts as a lively advocate for the preservation of New Englands significant 19th century resources.Read more
