We have been doing this since AOL was sending out CD's and Yahoo was dismissing Google as a start-up. Being "digital" and "doing analytics" is harder than just pushing a button. Because we have seen the hype-curves and "troughs of disillusionment," we are very aware of the pitfalls. But experienced people can be expensive to hire, something smaller publishers typically can't afford. This is another reason we wanted to build an approach that was less reliant on expensive people's time. So while we come from different parts of the ecosystem, we are united in our desire to address a business and societal problem: 1.- To help local news find more paying subscribers 2.- To stop the spread news deserts and preserve a healthy civic dialogue in all types of communities Being a MISSION-BASED organization means we are NOT about making as much money as we can. We want to give MORE back to the publishers. But to do this, our model needs to be different. We will rely more on volunteer experts for their smarts, use well-built existing tools that can be as self-service as possible, and work towards payment plans that keep the majority of the money with the local news orgs.
