Description:

Since 1925, United Way Halifax has been committed to our community. It was originally named the Community Chest and although the name has changed over the years, the original vision of working within the community and supporting people has remained the same. Poverty and community health are the two issues that consume all attention as we change community conditions. United Way has five primary roles: funder, researcher, partner, convener and advocate. Money is raised through employee giving in workplaces, corporate gifts that match workplace donations, individual contributions from community members or planned giving. Panels of volunteers recommend distribution of funds to support the primary roles under four strategies: Opportunities, Social Capital, Neighbourhoods and Healthy Living. Action for Neighbourhood Change is a unique neighbourhood initiative that identifies resident leaders and supports efforts to make the area safe and supportive for all. Spryfield and Dartmouth North are the first two neighbourhoods with work in Fairview now underway.
