The Lake Clinic-Cambodia,TLC, is dedicated to providing medical care and health education to families and communities living in one of the most remote and isolated areas of Cambodia-the Tonle Sap Lake and its tributaries. These are floating villages of fishermen and some trades people who provide the country of Cambodia with one-third of their prot... ein. The average family income is roughly $2.00 per day, and perhaps to explain the situation best it is simply to say that if someone is ill, then the diesel cost alone is $40 to $50 to bring that ill person to the nearest facility. It is often a harsh environment in which people must make harsh decisions. Jon Morgan, The Lake Clinic's founder and current director, first came to Cambodia in 1994, and in the past nearly 20 years he developed several LNGOs (Local Non-Governmental Organizations) that continue to serve this country. He was also the founding director of The Angkor Hospital for Children (1998-2006), Cambodia's premier pediatric teaching hospital. The Lake Clinic-Cambodia came about because through the years Jon witnessed the poverty and the need for health care in these villages. Since its beginning in 2007, as just an idea, TLC has grown until today when there are 5 floating clinics (in 5 of 9 villages) and a small "fleet" of boats providing transport and support for two clinical teams-one on the Tonle Sap Lake, and the other team working on the Stung Sen River in Kompong Thom to Kompong Chhnang. The work of TLC is difficult. Our Cambodian clinicians and support staff must spend three days each week working in an ever-changing environment (the Tonle Sap Lake rises and falls up to 30 feet each year.)
