Since September 2014, ASHNHA has partnered with the State of Alaska Section of Epidemiology, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center and other members to create the Alaska Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative. The partnership is designed to support development of antimicrobial stewardship programs in all hospitals and long-term care facilities in Alaska. While at one time, antibiotics revolutionized the practice of medicine by providing a rapid cure to many illnesses that were once fatal, those days may soon be gone. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria caused by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics is pushing the healthcare industry to re-evaluate how medicine is practiced. "The end of antibiotics is no longer a question" said Arjun Srinivasan, MD, (CAPT, USPHS) Associate Director for Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention Programs for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We are quickly running out of therapies to treat some infections that previously had been eminently treatable." The Alaska Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative is a an active partnership of acute care and long-term care hospitals dedicated to developing innovative strategies to ensure appropriate antibiotic use. A2SC's goal is a simple one: all patients in Alaska will receive the right antibiotic at the right time and only when necessary.
