Pat McManus, a National Certified Addiction Counselor (NCAC), founded Rock In Prevention (Rock) with television executive Ray Johnson in 1990. Variety the Children's Charity and the Iowa Broadcasters Association were the founding sponsors. Prior to establishing Rock, Pat McManus counseled severely addicted teens in a hospital treatment center setting for seven years. McManus witnessed the devastating effects of alcohol and drug use and worked passionately to help teens rebuild their lives. Pat McManus conducted informal research with patients regarding methods they found more effective in preventing the first underage use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. From the teen's suggestions, Rock determined that its professionals should train local high school role models to use music and interactive activities with younger kids to teach them to make healthy choices. Neighborhood by neighborhood Rock has now helped more than 1.3 million children and adults since 1990. Rock is evidence based. Iowa State University researchers have completed a multi-year study on program outcomes. Rock has been honored as one of the 20 best prevention programs in the United States by Drug Czar General McCaffrey. The award was given on behalf of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Rock LIVE has developed an alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention program, anti-bullying program and character education program and provides schools the tools to continue these efforts locally in the classroom and at home with the child's parents - guardians through follow-up guides and compact discs of the songs used as teaching tools.
