Established in 1965, the Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre (PJHC) is the only mental health hospital in the Outaouais. Its mandate is to provide specialized mental health services to the entire population of the region. These services are available to 329,000 people. A quarter of a million of these people live in the metropolitan urban centre. The Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre is a recognized teaching centre for the University of Ottawa, McGill University and the Université du Québec en Outaouais. The Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre works in close partnership with a regional network of community agencies and other institutions. In recent years, it has developed a care and service model to maximize the quality of care by making the best possible use of its resources, aiming to bring care as close as possible to the patients in their own communities throughout the region. The Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre has a permit for 87 inpatient beds that are broken down as follows: 12 inpatient beds for children 0 to 13 years of age; 9 inpatient beds for teenagers 14 to 17 years of age; 39 inpatient beds for adults 18 to 64 years of age; 14 inpatient beds for seniors aged 65 and over; 13 inpatient beds for forensic psychiatry. In addition to these 87 inpatient beds, the Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre also has access to 12 inpatient beds located in short-term care hospital centres in the Outaouais region (region 07). The Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre's main facilities are located at 20 Pharand Street in Gatineau.
